Vicarious Trauma:

Managing the Fire Without Getting Burned by the Flames

This course reviews the impact of vicarious trauma, contertransferance, and compassion fatigue on the burnout process. The training content will assist the participant in identifying the signs and symptoms of each, as well as the difference in impact between direct trauma and vicarious trauma on their relationships with clients and other staff. Participants will complete a detailed wellness survey and construct a personal plan of change to increase their resiliency in response to the effects of vicarious trauma. 



Mary O'Sullivan LMFT, LADC, LPC, Clinical Manager and Clinical Trainer with over 27 years of experience, both nationally and internationally in both private and public sectors. In the State of Connecticut, Mary-K has trained for: Department of Corrections, Judicial Department, and the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services. As a trainer for the Division of Education and Training for the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, and the Judicial Department, Mary-K provides training to DOC staff, adult and juvenile probation officers, parole officers, juvenile residential services staff, bail staff, women's and family matters staff, clinicians, case managers, and medical staff.

Regular registration fees are:

  • $145 for Not-Yet-Members

The program fee covers workshop materials, assessment tools, and some meals. Payment is due in full upon registration and enrollment will not be guaranteed until payment is received.


This training has been approved for 5 Continuing Education Credit Hours by the National Association of Social Workers, CT and meets the continuing education criteria for CT Social Work Licensure renewal.
