The Media Literacy and Digital Culture graduate program at the School of Communication and Media Arts at Sacred Heart University is hosting a complimentary breakfast workshop for nonprofits on the importance of media literacy in the 21st century, co-sponsored by the CT Community Nonprofit Alliance. In the media saturated 21st century nonprofit organizations cannot afford to neglect the importance of media to their mission. Fully understanding the media environment is crucial for nonprofit organizations who often must combat distortions, myths, and stereotypes before they can gain public support for their causes. Dr. Bill Yousman, director of the Media Literacy and Digital Culture program, will lead the discussion.

A media literacy approach for nonprofit organizations enhances and goes beyond a traditional focus on public relations by emphasizing the role of images, stories, and persuasion in shaping public opinion and action; teaching sophisticated media analysis skills; and encouraging a comprehensive understanding of the power of media technologies and industries.
